A photography studio that is also a classroom

A classroom fitted with a ceiling rail grid for studio lights, a roll-down background system and flexible seating. The same room hosts theory lessons in the morning and studio shoots in the afternoon.

The challenge

A studio needs space a classroom cannot spare

Photography is taught in two ways: theory at a desk and practice under the lights. A separate studio room is rarely available, and a classroom full of light stands and cables is neither safe nor usable for lessons.

01

Stands and cables take the floor

Floor-standing lights and background stands block the room, take time to set up and leave cables for learners to trip over.

02

One room for theory and practice

The module needed a room where a group can sit for a lecture, then switch to a working studio set without moving furniture out.

The solution

Everything for the studio hangs from the ceiling

Lights travel on a ceiling rail grid and lift out of the way on pantographs. Backgrounds roll down when needed and roll back up after the shoot. The floor stays free for seating.

Theory lesson

Lights raised to the ceiling, backgrounds rolled up. Chairs with writing tablets fill the room.

Studio shoot

A background rolls down and lights move along the rails into position around the subject.

Video and chroma key

The green background comes down for video and compositing exercises.

Ceiling rail grid

Put a light anywhere in the room

Fixed aluminium rails run along the ceiling and carry travelling rails across them. Pantographs slide along the rails, so a light can be placed over any point of the room at the height the shot needs.

Background system

Change the backdrop with a pull of a chain

Seamless paper backgrounds hang in a row on a wall-mounted roll system. Each roll is lowered and raised with its own chain, so learners switch colours without ladders.

Classroom side

Seating and storage that stay out of the shot

Chairs with fold-up writing tablets turn the room into a lecture space and are easy to move aside for a shoot. Tall cabinets keep cameras and lenses locked in one place.

What the room makes possible

Real studio set-ups

Key, fill and back light can be placed from above at any angle, as in a professional studio.

Clear floor

No stands to knock over and no cables to trip on, even with a full group in the room.

Fast changeover

The room goes from lecture to studio and back within a lesson.

Colour on demand

Several seamless backgrounds ready to use, each lowered on its own chain.

Chroma key ready

Green background for video, keying and compositing tasks.

Equipment in its place

Lockable storage keeps cameras and lenses safe between lessons.
